Liliana Segre
Sen. Liliana Segre

Honorary Doctorate in “Transcultural Humanities”
academic year 2019-2020

Reason for the award:
“The doctorate pays particular attention to the historical and cultural education of young graduates who intend to undertake scientific research. UniBg therefore awards the title of Doctor of Research to Senator for Life Liliana Segre for her extremely important and noble work as a witness and for her commendable efforts in promoting widespread historical knowledge rooted in the consciousness of all.”

Liliana Segre (Milan, 1930) was deported at the age of thirteen to the Auschwitz concentration camp, where she was separated from her father—whom she never saw again—and where she also lost her paternal grandparents.

Over the last thirty years, she has devoted much of her energy to the civic commitment of bearing witness, recounting her experience without hatred or a sense of vengeance.
She has promoted an extraordinary campaign against indifference, violence, and racism in all its forms and manifestations.
She has directed her sober, clear, and powerful words above all to young people, so that they never lose sight of their rights and respect for others. In recent years, with unwavering commitment, she has met with nearly 300,000 young people in schools and universities, participating in numerous cultural and civic initiatives on the Shoah.

For his commitment to bearing witness, he has received numerous honors, including that of Commander of Merit of the Republic, as well as two honorary degrees: in Law from the University of Trieste in 2008, and in Pedagogical Sciences from the University of Verona in 2010. In October 2018, the University of the Adriatic “Gabriele D'Annunzio” in Chieti-Pescara awarded her the title of “Honorary Member of the Academic Corps.”

On January 19, 2018, she was appointed senator for life by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.
